Digital Self-Harm

"There is a growing body of evidence that suggests social media plays a role in increasing mental health issues among young people"

It's getting late to get serious about this problem...at some point we, adults, need to connect the dots and decide what role social media will play or not play in the lives of our children. We, adults, cannot afford to throw our hands up in the air in despair or have a victim mentality.

We make many appropriate decisions for our children to help them to stay healthy and safe. Of course, we try to find the balance by doing this while allowing them the freedom to make their own decisions, learn from mistakes, etc.á We need to do the same with social media.

But age limits, in my opinion, must be considered. I am not sure any parent/guardian would give the keys to the family car to their 14 year old and allow their son/daughter to drive around the neighborhood, hit a few trees or other vehicles, and tell them to just return the car and be out of it in an hour.

This approach would get parents/guardians most likely arrested; not to mention the injuries - or worse - that the young driver and other innocent pedestrians could suffer as a result.

Likewise I'm not sure, when it comes to social media, that we - adults - could afford to surrender minimum age considerations, allow children to make their mistakes, or simply set time limits. But, let's be honest, that is basically the current approach for most families.
